Elite Care by Dr. Liesa Harte, M.D.

Interview with Dr. Liesa
How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be a Medical Detective and Functional Medicine and Anti-aging Specialist?
To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you a defining moment and resulting “compelling story” that brought me to where I am today, finding the root causes of what patients are experiencing and eliminating them once and for all.

When I went to medical school back in the late 1980s, I thought I was going to learn how to find the root causes of people’s medical issues and how to fix those so that patients would be as healthy as they possibly could be. The reality was not exactly in line with my expectations.

The first two years of medical school were full of learning that could be directly used to understand the root causes of what ails people. Unfortunately, starting with the third year of medical school when we started seeing patients, it became all about quickly labeling the patient with a diagnosis and writing prescriptions.

Besides the labeling and prescribing, it was also surprising and alarming that no one was considering the body as a whole. We were taught to think of isolated silos like cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, gastroenterology, dermatology, etc. without considering the rest of the body. The fact that this usually causes more problems that it solves was like the elephant in the room; no one talked about it.

When I opened my practice after finishing my residency training, it was all about labeling patients with diagnoses (as if just the labeling helped them) and giving them a list of prescriptions. It was upsetting when patients would come in and tell me how bad they were feeling and I believed them, but the handful of labs we were taught to order in training would all be “normal”, so I had very little to offer these patients.

I finally burned out and moved to the South of France, determined to get my French medical license. Unfortunately, I was not an EU citizen and was never allowed to get my French medical license. After living there for six years and shadowing a French doctor in her practice for much of that, I finally moved back to Texas and figured out how to get the training I needed to actually find the root causes of what my patients were experiencing, and to aggressively address all of these root causes.

Ever since that first course I took with the Institute for Functional Medicine, I have been able to actually reverse disease and dysfunction in many cases, and to empower my patients so that they know exactly what to do, what not to do, and what to tweak so that they enjoy the feeling of optimal health and renewed energy. I absolutely love what I am able to do with my patients now!

Who are your patients and clients exactly?
I work with people just like you who are smart, busy, and really good at what they do; however, have never been taught exactly how to achieve their own best health and energy. Until meeting me, they didn’t know how to avoid the medical problems that run in their family.

The vast majority of my patients have worked long and hard to reach the level of success they enjoy today – often sacrificing sleep, eating foods that are rich in calories and poor in nutrition, not taking time out to exercise and relax and take care of themselves and their relationships.

They want a doctor who is a cutting edge health expert to assess them, identify the root causes of how they feel and what they are experiencing, and to tell them exactly what to do to reverse their diseases and dysfunction, so that they feel vital and energized from the time they wake up until they relax into sleep at night.

How are you different from other doctors?
I believe that when it comes to your health, “good enough” is not good enough. I spend a lot of time getting to know my patients and every single thing that impacts their health – from their genetics to toxin exposure, nutritional deficiencies to food allergies, and beyond. A good way to sum it up is that I am very proactive in helping my patients achieve optimal health and energy instead of just spending 7 minutes with a patient being reactive with a prescription for their latest symptoms. I get my patients off of way more prescriptions thatn I put them on. I can and do prescribe, but I do it only as a bridge or last resort.

I also limit the number of patients in my practice. Instead of 3,000 to 4,000 patients typically in an insurance-focused reactive primary care office, I only accept 30 primary care patients at a time. I limit the number of patients in my other problem-specific programs, as well.

Did you know that studies have shown that there is an average 10 year delay from the time something is cutting edge and known until it is common practice in the average primary care medical office?! I find that unacceptable. My goal is no more than a 3 month delay. That is one reason I am constantly attending medical conferences. I want my patients to benefit from the latest cutting edge technology and knowledge.

What type of personality do you work best with, and what is expected of me?
My Elite Care programs were created for people who are absolutely excited and deadly serious about achieving their own personal optimal health and renewed energy. They were created for people who want to take full advantage of the cutting edge testing that is available to help determine the exact root causes of what they are experiencing with their health and what is looming in their future if they don’t take action.

Being a high achieving go-getter myself, I prefer to work with other high achieving go-getters who are super ready to get going and just want to know exactly what steps to take to feel great, look great, and have the best health and highest energy.

Consider what you’ll do with me to be an active learning course. You will be expected to take serious and consistent actions. No excuses anymore, just a very different way of thinking and lifestyle, and full support while you achieve this incredibly exciting goal: dramatically improved health and energy, and in record time.

For what type of patient or client is this program not going to work?
Please know that I’m very selective in who I work with and I cherry-pick m patients, choosing to (gently) turn away people who aren’t suited for my programs and won’t get the results for which they would have signed up for. (It wouldn’t be fair to them.)

The Elite Care programs are NOT for those who are only able and willing to accept the level of services and testing that their insurance plan will pay for. They are not for those who have no money coming in and are absolutely, financially desperate, at least not right away. It’s been my experience that people in financial crisis do not trust the recommendations I give them and do not do the work (probably because they spend so much time worrying about where they are going to get next month’s rent check or mortgage payment.)

If you fall in that category, it’s absolutely okay. We’ve all been in times of financial crisis at one point or another. Do yourself 3 favors:

Get some money coming in with a fulltime or part-time job at the very least, and then call me. This will take the edge off and provide a little more peace of mind. Mostly, it will de-clutter your mind enough to focus on your Elite Care program advice and the BIG picture. Once you start feeling dramatically healthier and more energetic as a result of our work together, you can then be more productive at work and perhaps take on work you were unable to do before because of your less-than-great health and energy.
Sign up for the complimentary Elite Care Health and Energy Tips over email. The free information will get you started towards your health and energy goals until you’re ready to work with me one-on-one.
Make it a point to read my blogs and watch my videos. These teaching will give you a LOT of things to think about.
Doing these three things will really help you get primed for our work. When you’re ready, call me and we’ll get started. (I’m in no rush and will likely be here when you need me and are ready.)

Another type of person I won’t work with (without exception) is the whiner or the chronic skeptic, as well as individuals who consistently make excuses for not following my advice or who challenge every aspect of the program. If you are one of these people, I gently and respectfully ask that you not call, and I hope you understand why. We’ll probably not work well together and I wouldn’t want to waste your time or money. Is that fair?

What exactly is a Dramatic Health Makeover? What does it include?
Achieving a consistent high level of health and energy begins with fully and accurately assessing your current state of health.

This assessment process typically includes genetic testing to identify what health problems you are at increased risk for, your nutritional status, allergies and immune responses to things in your environment/foods/drugs, the toxins that are built up in your body, your brain’s neurotransmitter levels and imbalances, your hormone levels and imbalances, the health of your digestive system, enzyme levels, your heart attack and stroke risk, sexual desire/function/satisfaction, cancer risk, fitness level, brain function, emotional health, and the health of your relationships with others.
Once I have your written questionnaires that objectify your subjective experience and your various test and lab results, then I determine which of these findings are the root causes – generally 5 to 6 things at any one time.
I work with you to formulate an aggressive plan for dealing with these root causes so they are no longer having a negative impact on your health and energy.
We stay in close contact with you, hold you accountable, and are there for you if you experience any challenges.
Does this really work?
It absolutely works!

What results can I expect?
It is reasonable to expect dramatically improved health and energy.

How quickly can I expect results?
Almost every patient can expect dramatic results in 12 weeks or less, and often patients tell me that they have dramatic improvements within the first two weeks after starting my treatment plan.

How can I guarantee myself that I will get healthier and renew my energy in record time?
Be completely candid and thoughtful when you fill out your questionnaires and communicate with us in any way.
Implement the advice we give you.
Do exactly what we recommend.
Understand that this involves lifestyle changes and is not just a quick fix. In order to sustain your optimal health and energy, you will need to continue to embrace your personalized healthier lifestyle.
Will I be able to recover any of my investment I put into this program?
While we do not accept or file insurance for you for our professional time and services, we do provide you with a medical receipt that you may be able to use to obtain out-of-network benefits through your insurance company.
You should be able to use your HSA (health savings account) or your FSA (flexible spending account) if you have one of these programs.
Your labs should be covered as much or as little as they were before we stopped participating in insurance programs as long as you are not in an HMO insurance program. You need to understand that many specialty labs are proactive and cutting edge, and are simply not covered by most insurance policies.
Many of our patients are able to improve their health and enegy so much that they can return to work, increase their hours at work, or elevate the level of work they are able to do, so that they end up making significantly more income back than our program cost them.
How long is the program?
Most of our programs last at least 12 months. That includes my Primary Care Concierge Program (limited to 30 patients), Venus Package for Female Bio-identical Hormones, Complete Man Package for Male Hormones, Thyroid and Adrenal Package, Annual Weight Loss Program to help you normalize your weight and maintain it, and the More Energy Now! Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Package.

I think my favorite program is the Dramatic Health Makeover. This program is short and intensive, and is a great place to start if you are the sort of person who have a scary family history or if you have been neglecting your health and are starting to accumulate diagnoses and prescriptions or at least a list of chronic health and energy complaints. This involves a comprehensive assessment of your current health and an aggressive plan to transform you to your personal optimal health and renewed energy. This is personalized medicine at its best.

Patients who have completed my Dramatic Health Makeover often continue in one of our other programs for ongoing maintenance or their new high level of health.
